Suzume Ramen
Suzume Ramen was a creative “hackathon” project I came up with alongside my colleague, fellow brand designer, and fellow ramen enthusiast Charlie B. Coombs. We came up with the brief for the restaurant together, and then created our set of logos for it afterwards. Because “Suzume” in Japanese means “Red Sparrow,” it allowed me to take on a more illustrative approach to branding that I don’t always have the ability to flex.
Ramen is food of the people, and with that I wanted to position Suzume a neighborhood establishment. From a tone standpoint it feels like your favorite place, familiar and comforting, a place you’d bring your friends or make new ones. Leaning into the quirky, illustrative quality of modern Japanese art, I created a visual identity system that is fun, friendly, and enticing.
For the website, I challenged myself to build it in Squarespace’s new design system, Fluid Engine, along with custom CSS & Javascript provided by the SquareKicker plugin.
